Recording podcasts in an echoey room? For $299 you can get a Portable Vocal Booth

I just took the RealTraps Portable Vocal Booth ($299) for a spin, and it does a really good job of minimizing room echo.

How good? Check out this WAV file (5MB) I just recorded in a big open room, my studio which is in the process of renovation to be exact.

I recorded this with the following equipment:

Marantz PDM671 Flash Recorder

Sennheiser MD46 Interview Microphone with windscreen

The WAV file is Mono, 44.1K, 16-bit

ASP.NET Gurus Wanted in Washington DC

One of our .NET Rocks! listeners is looking for ASP.NET gurus to join their software engineering team. Their web application developers are outstanding engineers, but many of them come from the LAMP, Oracle, Java, or RoR world. The ASP.NET Specialists will help these developers translate their knowledge onto the Microsoft technology stack.

Responsibilities:

o    Helping developers understand the intricacies of ASP.NET, the CLR and MS SQL.

o    Building ASP.NET-powered sites for our customers and partners.

The Requirements:

o    A Zen-like understanding of ASP.NET 2.0. You understand the page lifecycle, data binding, IIS, IHttpHandler, ASP.NET AJAX, precompilation, and anything else that Scott Guthrie talks about.

o    A deep foundational knowledge of the stuff that makes the web tick: HTTP, HTML, CSS, XML, and the relational data model.

o    A thorough understanding of the non-ASP.NET elements of the Microsoft stack, such as Microsoft SQL Server, the .NET Framework, and WPFE/WCF/WF.

o    You are a developer, not a programmer.

o    Excellent interpersonal skills and a sense of humor.

o    A solid command of written and spoken English. Outstanding writing skills a plus.

The Perks:

o    Work in an office that understands and values developers. No cubicles, no unnecessary meetings, the latest hardware, and an 11/12 on The Joel Test.

o    Design BIG applications that receive millions of hits per week and databases that process hundreds of transactions per second.

o    Show off your work. Instead of building "a scalable data access layer with an XML-configuration engine" that only five people will ever use, build a website that everyone -- including your mother -- can appreciate.

o    Great downtown location with convenient access to Metro, restaurants, and parking.

o    Competitive salary, benefits, and equity.

Two DNR shows a week, telerik becomes Franklins.NET Gold Sponsor, studio renovations, and public classes move to Atlanta!

You might have heard already on Tuesday's .NET Rocks!, but in case you didn't...

First of all, the announcement that affects all our fans. Starting this week we'll be publishing 2 .NET Rocks! shows every week. This week will be Tuesday and Thursday, and next week we're moving the first show to Monday making the publishing days Monday and Thursday. Woohoo!

Also, our friends at telerik have become Franklins.Net Gold sponsors, meaning that they are supporting EVERY SHOW! - .NET Rocks!, dnrTV, and Hanselminutes!! We honestly would not be doing this if it were not for all of our sponsors, and especially telerik. Thanks to all our major sponsors!

In local news, we're doing a major renovation to Pwop Studios. I realize we didn't publish lots of photos of the space before now, but you saw the studio if you watched the .NET Rocks! 2004 Movie (which will be coming soon on BitTorrent!) in the middle of which the Franklin Brothers band played our original tune New London Blues.

We have 2 26x26 rooms on the 5th and top floor of the Dewart Building (1915) in downtown New London, CT. The view is awesome from our space. One room was the training room, which seated 20 students. The other room was our studio where I started recording and editing .NET Rocks! in 2001. Just about all the media we produce comes out of that studio.

So what did we do? Why, knocked down the wall between them and gutted it, of course! We're going to turn it all into studio space and move the public classes to Atlanta (check the Franklins.Net website soon for new dates).

You can view the progress of the renovation here: http://photos.pwop.com/studio_renovation

Once the renovation is complete we're going to add screencast production and audio mastering and restoration to our list of services!

At the end I'll post a story on the entire process. Fun fun fun!

Carl

Oh yeah, we should have a new Mondays on Monday!
