Now IE7 Podcast Downloading Actually Works

I love the fact that I can just subscribe to a podcast feed with IE7 by clicking "Subscribe to this Feed" when I browse to an RSS feed, and I can even deal with opening the property window for the feed and checking off "Automatically download attatched files" even if I think this option should be checked by default. What I don't like is that the mp3 files (enclosures) wind up in wacky folders with names like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\Carl Franklin\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Enclosure\{29C16E95-09BA-4EC2-9AA2-71A7DC5743FF}

Do you think Joe iPod or even Josephine Zune for that matter is ever going to walk through all these strange folders and copy the contents therein to his or her \My Music folder so it can be synchronized to the iZune or whatever? Not likely.

So I've created CopyCFLEnc, a console app (.NET 2.0) that does just that. It aggregates all the enclosures accross all those directories using the Common Feed List API, and then copies the files to a specified folder.

Usage: CopyCFLEnc [foldername]

Where: foldername is a path to the target folder. If no foldername is specified, the files will be copied to \My Documents\My Music\My CFL Enclosures.

Notes:

All file types will be copied.
If the target folder does not exist it is created.
If a target file already exists, and is the same size as the source file, it is skipped.

Download it: http://www.pwop.com/CopyCFLEnc.zip (18K)

Enjoy!

Multiple Inputs Revisited

Back in February, 2004 I suggested Microsoft consider making a multiple input API. Well, it looks like my wish is coming true. Next year Microsoft plans to ship a Multiple Input SDK. I'm looking forward to it.

Watching the International Space Station and Shuttle cross the sky

I just found this, and it's very cool. Select your country and state or province, and you'll see a schedule of when the ISS and shuttle will be passing overhead in the sky. I saw it a couple nights ago. It was very very cool. My kids especially liked it.

.NET Rocks! to Rock the Canadian Vista Launches

Richard and I are off to Toronto to host The 64-Bit Question at the Vista/Office launch events in Toronto (Dec 5th, 2007), Montreal (Dec 7th, 2007) and Ottawa (Dec 12th, 2007). We'll be testing the crowd's IT, development, and business knowlege of Microsoft Technology, and hopefully getting at least one good .NET Rocks! show out of it.

The 64-Bit Question is a game show we first did live at the 2005 PDC. We hosted it again in Barcelona, and we played it with the previous hosts of .NET Rocks! on show #200. This time, however, we're giving away some serious prizes from our sponsors (dell, Levono, HP, and Microsoft) including XBox 360s, IPAQs and LCD TVs!!

Look out, Canada, here comes DNR!

No Hanselminutes or dnrTV this week

We couldn't pull it off in time, folks. However, next week is Carl week. In Hanselminutes I'm doing a Scott-style show about Digital Audio, and in dnrTV Mark Miller is guest host and I show how to write an asynchronous sockets terminal windows application in VB.NET. The following week I show how to do a sockets-based instant messaging server.

As for the rest of the holiday season:

No shows will be published the week of Christmas.

Scott is going on vacation for the month of December. We recorded two shows. One will air next week (Dec 6th) and the other on the 20th.

We don't know when we can do another Mondays. Perhaps after the holidays.

Blue Pizza #8 - Powder, Parks, and Meat!

Blue Pizza

Do you love East Coast skiing? So do the guys from Meathead Films! Hear their stores of filming in the powder, cliffs, and parks of the east. Listen to stories of the bonfire tribute to the snow gods, learn tips for doing an alley oop flat spin 5 in the halfpipe, discover Hammer’s tips for eating for free, and laugh as LJ stomps backies and a left cork 7 on a trampoline (on air). It’s not always easy to make a successful ski film, but these guys are pros, believing that “if you make the effort, the rewards can be epic!” As an added bonus, never-before-seen video footage is available for free at bluepizza.ems.com.
