www.dotnetrocks.com gets a facelift

Dax and I been working hard on our new website and it's finally here

New Features:
  • No more archive hell. All archive shows are linked from a single page.
  • "Listen Now" flash player
  • Download buttons are greyed out for missing files
  • New cleaner look and feel
The next feature you'll see in no more than a couple days (we hope) is a full-text search of all the transcripts. Enter a phrase and you'll get google-style results linking you into the transcripts, which are laid out in html just like the pdf files. We hope this will be a very useful resource for anyone looking for technical information on .NET topics.

New Master Feeds!

Well, we finally got around to giving our fans a way to download all of the shows in the archive in one fell swoop. In fact, we've done this for all of our shows (except dnrTV - that's coming), although the .NET Rocks! website is the only one we've updated now. Here are the links to the new "master feeds". These feeds download the shows in full-length mp3 format only using HTTP.

Regarding the Zune/Vista Incompatibility

You may have heard about this from The Register or some other source. The Microsoft Zune device is shipping without support for Windows Vista. What does that mean?

In case you don't know, I am a Microsoft Regional Director and are therefore privy to information the public doesn't usually get.  The real story is that even though Vista has been released to manufacturing, it is only available to beta testers and those with MSDN Subscriptions. It will not be available for consumers until January or February. The Zune team's deadline for shipping Vista-compatible software for the Zune is that time. This makes sense to me. I don't know what all the hub-bub is about. If you're on the bleeding edge you have to deal with timing issues like this. It comes with the territory. The anti-Microsoft hype is "Zune doesn't support Vista." The reality is quite different.

Microsoft and Novell Playing Nice

According to this press release, Microsoft is embarking on a new era of cooperation with Novell around supporting SUSE Linux. What it boils down to is that Microsoft will support SUSE on machines that support Windows, and will co-develop technology that will make it easier for people to run both on the same machine.

Whatever you think the outcome for either company will be, I think the consumer wins here. I commend Microsoft and Novell for setting the example of what can be done when old rivals bury the hatchet and get on with it.

What do you think?

Pwop graphics guru Dax Pandhi hits the big time

DaxAnyone who has seen all our websites (www.dotnetrocks.com, www.mondays.pwop.com, www.hanselminutes.com, www.dnrTV.com, www.pwop.com) knows that Dax Pandhi at Nukeation Studios is responsible for all the graphic design.

Well, to make a short story longer, he scored a gig at an IndiMix, an Indian conference sharing the same stage as Steve Ballmer. The local paper also did a news story on him in which he calls out his connection with us as helping him get off the ground.

Way to go, Dax!

Apologies for foul language in .NET Rocks! #200

We got several complaints about some minor profanity (both sexual and religious in nature) that was not bleeped in show #200. We are usually very careful about this, but a couple got by us this time. We are in the process of fixing this and will upload a version 2.0 soon. We try to make a product that you can feel safe sharing with kids.

Thanks to those who brought it to our attention. I will add a comment to this post when it is online.
