Mondays #57 - Personal Details

Personal Details

Mark is gravely concerned about his personal details leaking out onto the Internet via the unscroupulous lack of editing on Carl's part. Geoff is away finishing up his move back to the area. Carl teaches us what he's learned this week. Mark has Dumbah! Karen says "Get over yourself!" and Richard has achieved Toy Nirvana.

Find the funny in this week's dnrTV

This week’s show with Adam was recorded at about 9AM after I pulled an all-nighter waiting for Adam to prepare for the recording. He, of course, was on Aussie time, which is 14 hours ahead (or is it behind?) Eastern time. Needless to say, I was a bit foggy.

So, Adam makes this great joke with code during the presentation. I didn’t get it, and my initial reaction was just “yeah…”  Then, at least five minutes later it hits me, and Adam says something like “you just getting that now, are you?”

I am humbled and ashamed to let such a great joke go unsupported for so long. Adam, you got me!

Mark Dunn + Biztalk = Magic

Mark Dunn, who you most likely know as the original co-host of .NET Rocks!, has got a winner of a BizTalk class on his hands. He has been bragging to me on IM about how he’s got the best BizTalk Boot Camp available today. It’s a 5 day brain-buster with 10–12 hour days. We’ll definitely be hosting this class at Franklins.Net in the near future.

Check out this glowing review from Greg Young, who took the very first “beta” class on July 10th

Pwop's New Website

Pwop Productions’ website has had a facelift. Dax and I did the deed in only one night.  The man is amazing.  Dax skinned my blog, and has created a nice little side-business of blog skinning. Get on the list now, because he’s a busy man. Thanks, Dax.

I also want to mention that we’re not moving just yet. We hope to be moved in by April, 2007. A lot has to be done first. The space is unfinished. The good news is I get to spec it out to my liking. We will have a full music production studio, classroom, sound booths, and editing suites as well as offices. Plenty of room to grow into.

I’ve also updated the specs on the Podcasting Kit, which I blogged about a long time ago. This is a kit you can get from Caruso Music for around $400 and includes a condenser microphone, pre-amp, and a 1 GB Flash recording device. I’ve also created some videos that show you how to put it together, set the levels correctly, and install and use the software.

Pwop News

I'm establishing a new category on my blog for Pwop-related news.

It seems like within the last three weeks the corporate world has discovered podcasts as a great PR channel. We anticipate major growth, so much that we're moving our studio down the street to a newer building. It's going to be nice not to worry "is the elevator going to break?" when I go to my office.

Recording Mondays Tonight, and there might be a live feed!

Tonight will be a special occasion for Mondays fans, as we’re recording the first show since we went to the Netherlands in May tonight around 9PM EDT.

As you probably know (thanks, dawg) Rory Blyth is at Pwop Studios this week collaborating on a new project with me, and will join us with a rousing Google Weirdos. Of course, Mark Miller will have stories of Dumbah than Me. Geoff will also be here to tell us all what the hell he’s been doing with himself. Karen will be in the studio. Best of all, Richard Campbell is going to skype in from Japan! I will bring “Things I’ve Learned this Week” and “Stoner Celebrities” to the party.

We’re going to try to get a live feed going tonight for those of you who used to hang out during the recordings of DNR and Mondays. I won’t know until later if we can pull it off, but I think we can. Watch the comments here in this blog post as we get closer to show time.

Mondays Next Week!

We're going to have an awesome Mondays on the 17th.

This has been the busiest year we've ever had, collectively. Mark has been working on new products for DevExpress, Richard has been traveling all over the world, I've been busy with Pwop (new shows, etc). It's been a hell of a year so far.

With a small window of opportunity, and Rory being in town, we couldn't pass up doing Mondays for next week. We've been saving up the good stuff.

To answer those of you who have suggested "you'll never get a sponsor by missing shows"... well... we really haven't actively looked for advertisers for Mondays yet.  The whole sponsor thing is part of the Mondays schtick. Before we can do that we need to get somewhat of a profile of our listeners. In order to get that we want to have a giveaway, and in order to do THAT we need to... just get the time to do it. So, don't fret. We're moving ahead slowly but surely. Mondays is something we love to do but it takes lots of time and a bit of money to do it the way I want it done.

Thanks for your patience.

Portable Google = Great Equalizer

“I never touch the stuff. That’ll give you prostate cancer!” said my friend, pointing to the shaker of black pepper I was offering to him for his poached eggs. It was about 3AM and we were at one of my favourite late-night diners in Southeastern Connecticut getting a bite to eat after working into the night on a video project.

“What? Who told you that?” I asked in disbelief. I thought I was up on all the latest foods that supposedly contribute to cancer.

“A friend” he said, a bit surprised that I had questioned his claim. So I did what any nerd with an Internet-enabled cell phone would do. I “googled” it.

After a few minutes I couldn’t find a single reference linking black pepper to prostate cancer. A few minutes later I discover that pepper has been shown to strengthen the immune system. Here’s a quote from mapi.com:

“Black pepper is another common spice whose effects in the diet have been well documented. Research published in Cancer Letter in the August 16, 1993 issue reported that 20 days after adding black pepper to the diet, the subjects' liver detoxification systems were strengthened, aiding in purification of the blood tissue and enhancing the overall immune system.”

A few minutes later I discover that capsaicin, the stuff that gives hot peppers their kick, has been recently shown to cause prostate cancer cells to kill themselves.

He didn’t argue with the results of my quick research, which I managed to pull off in about 5 minutes over breakfast at a diner in the middle of the night.

That little exchange taught me something. Never before have human beings been able to check facts in real time from virtually any location, and most importantly, before we accept said facts as being true. Just a year ago I would have put down the pepper shaker, told myself “I should check that out when I get home”, and promptly forgotten to do so.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from participating in this instant information society it’s that BS is becoming less and less effective. This plays out on the world stage as well. Governments all over the world, especially ours, have to take drastic measures to keep their operations secret. We have counted on our ability to BS each other (as people and as nations) for so long that we don’t expect to be called on our BS so quickly and easily.

In the end, the cleansing light of my portable real-time anti-BS device kept my friend from spreading BS that was spread to him, and it also gave us both some new information that we can use immediately.

Blue Pizza #3 - Ride Like a Girl

Blue Pizza

Pro Downhill Mountain Biker Alexis Wruble is a rising force on the U.S. racing circuit, ranked #1 on the East Coast. More than once, Alexis cruised through New England winters, endos, shoulder dislocations, and intimate moments with tree trunks to log impressive finishes at Diablo Domination, NORBA Nationals, and more. In this episode, Alexis dishes up tales of finding confidence from a stranger at a 10 foot drop in Durango, inspiring others by teaching clinics at Pedro’s Fest, and falling in love with her sparkly pink bike. Like the title of the award-winning video she stars in, Alexis can “Ride Like a Girl” and is darn proud of it.
